Though Amherst is definitely country, it's a hotbed for artists, academics and young people--there's seemingly endless things going on, including daily arts shows, theater, live music, and a robust bar and restaurant scene. I always had it in my head that I'd move to Boston after I graduate, though that's looking like less and less of an option as my commencement nears. What's a young person working in the Upper Valley to do? I've been visiting New Hampshire for years, and am an avid skier, hiker, and all-around nature-lover, so I know I'll love the endless outdoorsy opportunities.
But what would be the most stimulating place for a young person to live? Hanover seemed like a obvious choice, though while I haven't visited it yet looking around craigslist and other places it doesn't seem like there's much of a social scene there beyond frat parties. Lebanon seems like it might be more promising, though I can't really tell.
Is there any place in Vermont or New Hampshire within commuting distance that might be a better fit? I really wouldn't want to drive more than 45 minutes at the most. Concord would be the big 'metro' in that range, but it's basically at the furthest edge of your desired radius assuming you speed only a little and Concord is generally more of a family town in any case. It's true that for undergrads Hanover is largely a binge-drinking fratty place, but they do have grad programs plus other young professionals affiliated with the college and the medical center.
I do think the area will be challenging, but I don't think the experience will be horrible. So I'm not sure that matters much - I'd probably mostly suggest trying to find a grad student or other young professional to rent with. Personally I'd say to go into the experience with the plan that it be something you do for months, with a plan to move on to somewhere after.
Your first year out of college you can meet some of your social needs by having college friends come visit or using weekends to travel down to the Pioneer Valley, Boston or up to Burlington or even Montreal. It may not be somewhere you settle long term, but getting your professional foot in the door and getting something on your resume now will likely help increase your odds of being able to handpick where you want to go next.
Look up "Upper Valley" or Lebanon "Meet-Ups. If you're not familiar with the term, a "meet-up" is where people usually professionals get together to exchange ideas, converse and become acquainted with new people with similar interests. If you will work at a large company or organization, then you will have many colleagues, some of whom might become friends, who will then invite you into their social circles. If that is what you crave, then pass up on the interview.
